CCAT logic questions: syllogisms, ordering, series and attention to detail
CCAT logic questions test whether you can draw correct conclusions quickly. There are four kinds: short deductions ("if the first two statements are true, the third is true, false or uncertain"), ordering puzzles, number and letter series, and attention-to-detail checks. They sit in the CCAT's math and logic area. Each kind has a reliable method, and the biggest single gain comes from understanding what "uncertain" really means. For the whole test, see our CCAT test guide.
- Four kinds: deductions, ordering, number/letter series, attention to detail.
- Uncertain = the statements allow either answer. It's the most-missed option.
- Draw ordering puzzles on paper; it takes 5 seconds and prevents most errors.
- For series, check differences first, then multiples, squares and alternation.
- forge's CCAT-style bank has 140 logic questions: 40 deductions, 40 matching, 28 ordering, 32 series.

Quick summary
- CCAT logic covers deductions, ordering puzzles, series and attention-to-detail checks.
- In deductions, choose uncertain whenever the statements allow both answers.
- Draw orderings as a line; don't hold them in your head.
- Find series rules by checking differences, then multiples, squares and alternating patterns.
- For matching pairs, compare in small chunks and watch for swapped or look-alike characters.
1. Deductions: true, false or uncertain
You get two statements and a third. If the first two are true, is the third true, false or uncertain? Use only what's stated.
Uncertain. The expired contracts could be anywhere, including outside the blue folder. Nothing forces any blue-folder file to be expired, and nothing rules it out.
- All A are B; X is A → X is B: true.
- All A are B; X is not B → X is not A: true.
- All A are B; X is B → X is A: uncertain (B can include things that aren't A).
- Some A are B; some B are C → some A are C: uncertain.
Our deductive reasoning guide covers these patterns in more depth.
2. Ordering puzzles
Clues compare people or items ("Asha is taller than Ben") and you identify the tallest, shortest or one in a given position.
Line them up: Farid > Dev > Ella > Chloe. Second tallest: Dev.
3. Number and letter series
Find the rule and give the next term. Check in this order:
- Constant difference: 5, 9, 13, 17 (+4).
- Growing difference: 2, 3, 5, 8, 12 (+1, +2, +3, +4).
- Multiplying: 3, 6, 12, 24 (×2).
- Squares or cubes: 1, 4, 9, 16.
- Two series interleaved: 2, 20, 4, 18, 6, 16.
- Sum of previous two: 2, 3, 5, 8, 13.
For letters, convert to numbers (A = 1 … Z = 26). Our number series guide has more worked examples.
4. Attention to detail
You compare pairs of codes, names or numbers and count how many are exactly the same. Compare in chunks of three or four characters and watch for swapped neighbours (KJHT / KJTH) and look-alikes (0 / O, 1 / I, 5 / S).

Frequently asked questions
What logic questions are on the CCAT?
Criteria lists math and logic as one of the CCAT's three areas. Candidates and prep providers describe the logic items as deductive questions (if the first two statements are true, is the third true, false or uncertain?), ordering puzzles (who is tallest?), number and letter series, and attention-to-detail items such as counting matching pairs.
What does 'uncertain' mean in CCAT logic questions?
Uncertain means the first two statements don't give enough information to decide whether the third is true or false. If it could be either, the answer is uncertain.
How do I solve CCAT ordering questions quickly?
Draw a quick line or column and place each person or item as you read the clues. Don't try to hold the order in your head: writing it takes five seconds and prevents most errors.
How do I find the rule in a number series?
Check the differences first. If they're constant, it's adding; if they grow steadily, it's an increasing difference; if each term is a multiple of the last, it's multiplying. Also check squares, alternating series and adding the two previous terms.
How long should a CCAT logic question take?
Short deductive and series questions should take 15 to 20 seconds. Longer ordering puzzles can take more, so skip them if you're behind and come back at the end.
