HireVue interview 2026: questions, format and preparation
A HireVue OnDemand interview lets you record answers to employer-selected questions without a live interviewer. Some interviews are reviewed by people; some configurations also use AI scoring. In both cases, the safest preparation is the same: answer the question directly, show job-relevant evidence and deliver a complete response inside the timer. For general setup, read video interviews; for one-way recording mechanics, use one-way interview prep.
- HireVue prep is mostly answer structure, timing and delivery practice.
- Not every HireVue is AI-scored; the employer controls the configuration.
- Prepare reusable stories for teamwork, conflict, leadership, failure and motivation.
- Record answers with only bullet prompts visible, not a full script.

What to focus on first
| Focus area | Why it matters | Best drill |
|---|---|---|
| STAR | Competency answers need a beginning, action and result. | 60-second STAR drills. |
| Relevance | AI and reviewers both need the answer to match the prompt. | Repeat the question in your planning notes. |
| Concision | Long setup crowds out the action/result. | Cut context to one sentence. |
| Energy | Camera delivery often feels flatter than normal speech. | Watch back and raise energy by 10%. |
Common traps
- Script reading. It reduces eye contact and natural rhythm.
- Generic competency claims. Use a specific story with a result.
- Ignoring prep time. Thirty seconds is enough to jot STAR bullets.
How to practise from here
Pick five common prompts and record them three days in a row. Keep the same story bank, but reduce filler and sharpen the result each time.
HireVue also supports live interviewing and separate assessments, but candidates searching for “a HireVue” usually mean the asynchronous OnDemand format. You see a prompt, receive a configured preparation window, record within a time limit and submit without a reacting interviewer. Question count, retakes and timers vary by employer.
What HireVue evaluates
HireVue’s current AI documentation says AI-scored interview answers are transcribed and language models use the response text to predict job-related competencies. That does not mean every recorded interview is automatically scored. Employers can use unscored recordings for human review. Prepare for the competency behind the question, not for speculative tricks.
- Content relevance: did you answer the actual question?
- Structure: is your answer organised (STAR or similar)?
- Competency signals: do you demonstrate the skills the role requires?
- Communication clarity: can the reviewer (human or AI) follow your logic?
The three things to practise first
1. STAR under 60 seconds
Most HireVue questions are competency-based. STAR (Situation → Task → Action → Result) is the standard structure. The challenge is fitting it into 60–90 seconds without rambling.
- Situation: 1 sentence of context.
- Task: 1 sentence on what you needed to do.
- Action: 2–3 sentences on what you did (this is the longest part).
- Result: 1 sentence with a specific outcome or number.
2. Concise delivery
Record yourself answering a practice question. Watch it back. If you would skip ahead while watching, so will the reviewer. Cut filler words, remove repeated points, and get to the action faster.
3. Authentic energy
Without an interviewer reacting, candidates often flatten their delivery. Speak as if you are explaining something interesting to a colleague — slightly more animated than your default, but not performatively enthusiastic.
Common HireVue questions
- Why do you want this role and this organisation? Connect specific motivation with evidence from your experience.
- Tell me about a time you worked through conflict. Show listening, action and a constructive result.
- Describe a difficult problem you solved. Make your reasoning and personal contribution visible.
- Tell me about a failure or setback. Focus on ownership, correction and learning.
- Describe a time you led or influenced others. Leadership can mean coordination and persuasion, not only formal authority.
Common HireVue mistakes
- Reading from a script: eye movement gives it away instantly.
- Generic answers: “I am a team player” says nothing. Give a specific example.
- Not using prep time: the 30-second prep window is for jotting STAR bullets. Use it.
- Answering a different question: re-read the question before you start recording.
How to build a HireVue story bank
Prepare five reusable stories: teamwork, conflict, leadership, failure and motivation. Each story should have one sentence of context, two action details and one concrete result. That gives you enough material to answer most competency prompts without sounding scripted. If your HireVue follows an online test, check the employer assessment hub for likely surrounding stages.

Does every HireVue interview use AI scoring?+
No. HireVue supports both scored and unscored OnDemand interviews, and the employer controls the setup. HireVue says its AI-scored interviews use transcripts of candidate responses to predict job-related competencies from the language used in an answer.
How many questions are in a HireVue interview?+
The employer chooses the number of questions, preparation window, response time and retake rules. Many interviews use several competency and motivation questions, but your invitation and on-screen instructions are the only reliable source for your exact configuration.
Can I redo a HireVue answer?+
Some company setups allow one retake per question. If available, use it only for serious stumbles — your first take is usually more natural.
What should I wear for a HireVue interview?+
Business casual is safe for most roles. The key is looking intentional — if you would wear it to an in-person first interview, it works for HireVue.
