HireVue prep: what candidates should practise first

By Suki Amano·5 min read·

HireVue is a one-way video interview platform used by hundreds of employers. The AI evaluates what you say and how you structure it — not your face. Focus your preparation on three things: STAR structure, concise delivery under 60 seconds, and authentic energy.

HireVue interviews feel different from normal interviews because there is no human on the other side. You get a question, prep time, a countdown, and a record button. The lack of feedback is what makes it uncomfortable — and what makes preparation essential.

What HireVue actually evaluates

After removing facial analysis in 2021, HireVue’s AI focuses on:

  • Content relevance: did you answer the actual question?
  • Structure: is your answer organised (STAR or similar)?
  • Competency signals: do you demonstrate the skills the role requires?
  • Communication clarity: can the reviewer (human or AI) follow your logic?
What it does not evaluate
HireVue no longer scores facial expressions, eye contact quality, or tone of voice as independent signals. A human reviewer may still watch your video, so presentation matters — but the AI is focused on content.

The three things to practise first

1. STAR under 60 seconds

Most HireVue questions are competency-based. STAR (Situation → Task → Action → Result) is the standard structure. The challenge is fitting it into 60–90 seconds without rambling.

  • Situation: 1 sentence of context.
  • Task: 1 sentence on what you needed to do.
  • Action: 2–3 sentences on what you did (this is the longest part).
  • Result: 1 sentence with a specific outcome or number.

2. Concise delivery

Record yourself answering a practice question. Watch it back. If you would skip ahead while watching, so will the reviewer. Cut filler words, remove repeated points, and get to the action faster.

3. Authentic energy

Without an interviewer reacting, candidates often flatten their delivery. Speak as if you are explaining something interesting to a colleague — slightly more animated than your default, but not performatively enthusiastic.

The rehearsal method that works
Pick 5 common competency questions (teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, conflict, failure). Write bullet-point STAR answers for each. Then record yourself answering them with only the bullets visible — not a full script. Do this three days in a row and your delivery will be noticeably sharper.

Common HireVue mistakes

  • Reading from a script: eye movement gives it away instantly.
  • Generic answers: “I am a team player” says nothing. Give a specific example.
  • Not using prep time: the 30-second prep window is for jotting STAR bullets. Use it.
  • Answering a different question: re-read the question before you start recording.

Frequently asked questions

Does HireVue use AI to evaluate facial expressions?+

HireVue removed facial analysis from its assessments in 2021. The AI now evaluates the content and structure of your verbal responses, not your facial expressions.

How many questions are in a HireVue interview?+

Typically 5–8 questions. Each gives you 30 seconds of prep time and 1–3 minutes to record your answer. The whole process takes 20–30 minutes.

Can I redo a HireVue answer?+

Some company setups allow one retake per question. If available, use it only for serious stumbles — your first take is usually more natural.

What should I wear for a HireVue interview?+

Business casual is safe for most roles. The key is looking intentional — if you would wear it to an in-person first interview, it works for HireVue.
