A HireVue interview is a recorded, one-way video interview. You see a question, get a short time to prepare, then record your answer against a timer, with no interviewer on the other side. HireVue says most have five to eight questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes. Some employers add short games. The employer controls the details: number of questions, timers, retakes, and whether AI scoring is used. Below is how it runs and how to get ready. Definition

HireVue is a hiring platform whose best-known product is the on-demand video interview. A candidate records answers to employer-set questions within set preparation and response times, and recruiters review the recordings, sometimes with AI-generated competency scores.

You record alone, on your own schedule, before a deadline set by the employer.
Each question has a preparation countdown and an answer countdown; recording starts automatically.
HireVue offers practice questions before you start. Nobody sees them, and you can take as many as you like.
AI scoring, if used, is based on the words you say. Recruiters may still watch the video.
Preparation is mostly stories, motivation answers and timed practice.

What happens in a HireVue interview, step by step

The invite. An email or text from the employer with a link and a deadline. Read it for timings, game components and whether retakes are allowed.
Setup check. You allow camera and microphone access in your browser or the HireVue app, and see yourself on screen.
Practice questions. HireVue says these aren't recorded or seen by anyone, and you can take as many as you like. Use them to check sound, framing and the countdown.
Each real question. The question appears as text or a short video. A preparation timer runs, then recording starts automatically and an answer timer counts down.
Retake (if allowed). You may be able to re-record. The most recent take is usually the one submitted.
Games (if included). Short tasks of about 3 minutes each. See our HireVue games guide.
Submit. You get a confirmation. Recruiters review after the deadline, and HireVue does not make the hiring decision.

Practise with less time than you'll get

If you can give a complete answer with 30 seconds of preparation, a longer preparation window on the day feels easy. The reverse isn't true. Train with the short version.

What HireVue assesses

Each question is written to test one competency, such as teamwork, problem solving or motivation. When an employer uses AI scoring, HireVue says the AI scores only the transcript of what you say, against that competency, using a five-level scale trained on expert human ratings. How you look and sound isn't part of it. Whether or not AI is used, a recruiter can watch your recording. Full details are in how HireVue scores your interview.

So what counts? Whether you answered the question that was asked, with a real example, clearly enough to follow, and got to a result before the timer ran out.

Your setup: camera, sound, light and connection

Camera at eye level. Stack books under a laptop. Looking down at the lens is unflattering and harder to follow.
Light in front of you, not behind. A window behind you turns you into a silhouette.
Quiet room, decent microphone. If AI scoring is used, it reads a transcript, so clear audio matters more than video quality.
Plain background. HireVue's AI doesn't score it, but a recruiter may see it.
Stable internet. HireVue recommends at least 0.35 Mbps. If you drop out, the same link lets you resume.
Charged device, notifications off. Close other apps that use the camera.

How to answer: the short version

Use the preparation time to decide which story fits and write three keywords, not a script.
Answer in your first sentence, then give the evidence.
STAR for behavioural questions: keep the situation short, spend most of the time on what you did, and land the result.
Talk to the lens, not the preview of your face.
Finish cleanly. Aim to wrap up with 10–20 seconds left rather than being cut off mid-sentence.

A 7-day HireVue preparation plan

Day 1: read the invite. Note the deadline, any timings, games and retake rules. Look up the employer's values and recent news.
Day 2: build your story bank. Bullet notes for seven stories: teamwork, conflict, deadlines, a challenge, leadership, failure and using data. Each needs your actions and a result.
Day 3: motivation answers. Write "why this company" and "why this role" with reasons that wouldn't work for a competitor.
Day 4: timed recordings. Record five answers with 30 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to answer. Watch them back and note one fix per answer.
Day 5: your industry's extras. Banks: compliance, ethics and a news story. Trading and tech: explaining technical ideas out loud. Finance: financial statements. Everyone: "explain something complex simply".
Day 6: setup and full run-through. Test your space, then answer five questions you haven't seen, back to back.
Day 7: take it. At a time you're alert, well before the deadline, so a technical problem doesn't become a missed deadline.

Common HireVue mistakes

Reading a script. It sounds flat, and anyone watching can see your eyes moving.
A 40-second setup. The situation should take one or two sentences.
Answering a different question. Re-read the prompt before recording starts.
Generic "why us?". If it fits a competitor, it's too vague.
Leaving it to the deadline. Technical problems happen. Give yourself a day's buffer.

How long is a HireVue interview?

HireVue says most video assessments have five to eight questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes; it recommends setting aside 45 minutes. If games are included, add about 3 minutes per game. HireVue's example of a combined assessment, with 4 to 6 questions and 2 to 3 games, takes 15 to 25 minutes.

Can you retake a HireVue answer?

It depends on the employer. Retakes are a setting each employer switches on or off per interview. HireVue's guidance recommends allowing them, but many graduate employers allow one retake or none. Your instructions screen tells you before you start.

Is there a practice question in HireVue?

Yes. HireVue offers practice questions before the real interview starts. HireVue says they aren't recorded or seen by anyone, and you can take as many as you like. Use them to check your camera, microphone and the countdown.

What happens if my internet drops during HireVue?

HireVue says you can pick up where you left off by reopening the same link. Game progress is saved too. HireVue recommends an internet speed of at least 0.35 Mbps up and down; a wired connection or a spot near your router is safest.

Does HireVue AI analyse my face?

No. HireVue's 2025 AI Explainability Statement says its AI scores only what you say, from a transcript. It does not assess facial expressions, body language, background or tone of voice. Recruiters may still watch the recording.

What should I wear for a HireVue interview?

Dress as you would for an in-person first interview at that employer: business casual for most graduate roles, smarter for banking and law. Plain colours work best on camera.

How soon do you hear back after a HireVue?

It varies by employer and how many candidates are in the round. Recruiters review results after the deadline, so a few days to a few weeks is common. You can ask the recruiter for a candidate feedback report, which HireVue recommends employers offer.
