JP Morgan HireVue 2026: the video interview, the math test and how to prepare
JP Morgan uses an on-demand video interview (HireVue) for most student and graduate programmes. Candidates report around 3 minutes per answer and 20 to 30 minutes in total. Markets (sales and trading) applicants report a separate math test in the same HireVue invitation. That's quick mental arithmetic, percentages and probability, scored separately from the interview. JP Morgan publishes very little about either, so we've kept what the firm says apart from what candidates report. For the full JP Morgan process (Pymetrics, SHL tests, Superday), see our JP Morgan assessment guide.
- JP Morgan says recorded interviews can test language, verbal presentation and technical ability.
- Candidates report ~3 minutes per answer, 20–30 minutes in total.
- Markets applicants report a separate math test in the same HireVue invite.
- Treat the interview and the math test as two separate hurdles.
- Markets prompts reportedly include a recent market headline: prepare one in depth.
- Most JP Morgan programmes: Pymetrics games, then the HireVue video interview, then a Superday.
- Markets: the HireVue invite reportedly includes a timed math test as well as video questions.
- The video questions are mostly motivation and competency, plus market awareness for Markets.
- The math test rewards speed and accuracy on simple arithmetic, not advanced maths.
What JP Morgan says about the video interview
JP Morgan's hiring FAQ says that for certain roles you may be asked to take an "on-demand/recorded video interview to evaluate your skills such as language proficiency, verbal presentation and/or technical abilities". It uses interviewing technology that shows you questions and records your responses. That's all it publishes. Question count, timings and retakes come from candidate reports and your own invitation.
Are the HireVue and the math test independent?
This is one of the most searched JP Morgan questions. Based on candidate reports, yes: they are two separate parts of the same invitation. You record video answers, and you complete a timed set of numerical questions. JP Morgan doesn't say how it combines them, so the safe assumption is that each is assessed on its own:
- A polished interview won't make up for a weak math score.
- A perfect math score won't make up for a generic "why JP Morgan".
- Do them in one sitting if the invite allows, when you're alert. Do the part you're less confident in first, while you're fresh.

The JP Morgan video interview questions
Candidates describe mostly motivation and competency questions. Markets applicants reportedly get market-awareness prompts too. One recent report describes a prompt asking you to discuss a market headline from the past week, with at least one hard number, and its relevance to JP Morgan. Expect these question types:
- Why JP Morgan, and why this division? Generic answers are easy to spot here.
- A time you took the initiative or went beyond what was asked.
- A challenge in a team and how you handled it.
- A recent market or business story and what it means for the firm (Markets, IB).
- A technical problem you solved (Technology and quantitative roles).
These match the pattern across banks in our analysis of 646 HireVue questions: teamwork, conflict, deadlines and "why us" come up at almost every bank.

Open HireVue practiceHow to prepare: a 5-day plan
- Day 1: read the invite. Note the deadline and whether a math test is included. Research the division you applied to.
- Day 2: write "why JP Morgan" and "why this division", plus three STAR stories: initiative, teamwork challenge, a setback.
- Day 3: Markets and IB: pick a market story from that week and prepare it in depth. Everyone else: prepare one business or technology story.
- Day 4: 20 minutes of mental arithmetic (percentages, fractions, quick multiplication, basic probability), then record every answer with the drill.
- Day 5: check your setup and complete it when you're sharp, well before the deadline.

Frequently asked questions
What is the JP Morgan HireVue?
It's JP Morgan's on-demand video interview: you record answers to set questions with no live interviewer. JP Morgan says these recorded interviews can evaluate skills such as language proficiency, verbal presentation and technical abilities. Candidates report around 3 minutes per answer and 20 to 30 minutes in total.
Are the JP Morgan HireVue and math test independent?
Candidates applying to Markets roles report receiving both in the same invitation: a video interview and a separate math test, both on HireVue. JP Morgan doesn't publish how the two are weighted, so treat them as separate scored parts. A strong interview won't rescue a weak math test, and a strong math score won't rescue a weak interview.
What is on the JP Morgan math test?
JP Morgan doesn't publish the format. Candidates describe quick numerical questions: mental arithmetic, percentages, fractions and some probability, under time pressure. Prep sites give conflicting question counts and timings, so check your invitation and practise speed rather than memorising a format.
Which JP Morgan roles get the math test?
It's mainly reported for Markets (sales and trading) applicants. Most other student and graduate programmes are reported to use Pymetrics games and a HireVue video interview without a separate math test. Your invitation email lists exactly what you need to complete.
What questions does JP Morgan ask in HireVue?
Mostly motivation and competency questions: why JP Morgan, why this division, teamwork, a challenge, and a time you showed initiative. Markets applicants also report market-awareness prompts, such as discussing a recent market headline and what it means for the firm.
Can I retake the JP Morgan HireVue?
Retakes are an employer setting in HireVue, and JP Morgan doesn't publish its policy. Check the instructions screen before you start, and practise as if you only get one take.
