JP Morgan assessments: Pymetrics, SHL tests & HireVue in 2026

By Pratham Ranjan·13 min read·

The JP Morgan assessment is a layered screen: Pymetrics game-based assessments, a situational judgement test, and SHL numerical, verbal and logical reasoning tests, together around 45–60 minutes, then a HireVue video interview and a final Superday. The reasoning tests are standard SHL formats, so drilling the real SHL question types is the most direct preparation. Start with our SHL provider hub, or compare firms in the employer assessment guides.

Source note: forge checks this guide against JPMorgan Chase careers material, SHL candidate practice pages, and Harver/pymetrics game-assessment material. Programme-specific test stacks can vary.

TL;DRthe 30-second version
  • Starts with Pymetrics games — 2–3 short behavioural games, no “right” answers.
  • Then a situational judgement test and SHL numerical, verbal & logical reasoning.
  • The aptitude portion is estimated at 45–60 minutes total.
  • A HireVue video interview follows — about 3 minutes per question, 20–30 min total.
  • The final stage is a Superday of behavioural and HR interviews.

Who is JP Morgan?

JP Morgan (JPMorgan Chase & Co.) is the largest bank in the United States and one of the oldest financial institutions in the world, tracing its roots back over 225 years. It employs more than 300,000 people across investment banking, asset and wealth management, and commercial and consumer banking. The firm frames its mission around powering economic growth and serving customers, clients and communities with integrity and respect — the business principles your situational judgement and interview answers should reflect.

The JP Morgan Pymetrics games

The first hurdle is a set of 2–3 Pymetrics games — short, neuroscience-based exercises that measure traits like risk tolerance, attention, memory and decision-making. There are no “right” answers; Pymetrics builds a behavioural profile and compares it to the traits JP Morgan values for the role. You cannot cram a personality, but you can remove the surprise: play the game types once so the mechanics are familiar, then play naturally and consistently. Our Pymetrics-style games guide and game-based assessments hub explain what each game measures.

Don't try to 'beat' Pymetrics
Candidates who try to fake an ideal profile usually score worse — the games have built-in consistency checks, and an inconsistent profile is a red flag. Play to your genuine instincts; the goal is fit, and a forced answer that lands you in the wrong role helps no one.

What is SHL?

SHL is the world’s most widely used psychometric test publisher — its assessments screen millions of graduate and professional candidates every year. When an employer says you have an “online assessment”, it is very often an SHL test running on the SHL platform. SHL does not set a universal pass mark; each employer licenses the tests and sets its own cut-score, which is why the same SHL numerical test can screen at the 50th percentile for one company and the 80th for another. Our SHL provider hub and which SHL test am I taking? guide decode exactly what you have been sent.

The full SHL test suite (not just numerical and verbal)

After the Pymetrics games, JP Morgan’s aptitude stage is SHL: candidates most often see the numerical, verbal and inductive (logical) reasoning tests plus a situational judgement test. But SHL’s suite is larger, and the exact mix changes by programme (markets, banking, tech, operations), region and intake year — a deductive section or the OPQ personality questionnaire can appear for some roles. Here is the full suite so nothing catches you out.

The JP Morgan SHL reasoning tests

After the games and the SJT, JP Morgan uses SHL numerical, verbal and logical reasoning tests. The numerical test reads data from tables and charts under a timer; verbal is true / false / cannot say; logical is inductive pattern sequences. The maths is GCSE-level — the difficulty is speed and the engineered distractors. Our SHL Numerical guide covers the archetypes; here is a representative trap. forge’s SHL question database shows share-of-total and wrong-base percentage questions are among the highest-error types — they reward dividing by the right base every time.

Worked example — share-of-total trap
A division's revenue was $320m of the bank's $2,000m total in 2024, rising to $400m of a $2,200m total in 2025. Did the division's share of total revenue rise or fall?

2024 share = 320 / 2,000 = 16.0%. 2025 share = 400 / 2,200 = 18.2%.

The division’s share rose, by about 2.2 percentage points.

Trap: noting that revenue grew ($320m → $400m) and assuming the share grew too — but you must divide by each year’s total. Here the share happens to rise, but only the ratio tells you; the raw increase alone does not.

The reasoning marks come from timed reps, not from re-reading the format. Practise the SHL formats free on forge

The situational judgement test

JP Morgan’s SJT presents workplace scenarios and asks you to rate or rank responses against the firm’s values. Answer the way the business principles point — client and customer interest, integrity, teamwork — rather than the most expedient option. See our situational judgement guide for the strategy.

Reading about the test isn’t the same as passing it

A guide like this one — or a video walkthrough — teaches you the format, the stages and the traps. That is the map, and it matters. But it cannot build the one thing the assessment actually scores: reasoning speed and accuracy under a live timer. That only comes from doing real questions under exam conditions, then reviewing why you missed each one. Passive reading and watching plateau quickly; deliberate, timed practice is what moves your percentile.

The most representative SHL practice is on forge: real, representative questions, a free diagnostic to find your weak spots, worked answer explanations, no subscription, and credits that never expire — the best way to practise the assessments that decide whether you get seen.

The HireVue video interview

JP Morgan’s HireVue interview is pre-recorded: roughly 3 minutes per question, 20–30 minutes in total, with no live interviewer. Record practice answers to competency and motivation questions and review your timing and delivery before the real thing. See our video interviews guide and HireVue prep for the STAR-R structure.

The JP Morgan Superday

The Superday is the final stage: a series of behavioural, competency-based and HR interviews held together to assess your fit with the role and the firm. Prepare a specific example for each business principle and rehearse role-relevant technical questions. Genuine motivation for the specific programme counts as much as polished answers.
